一般人认为，凡是适宜建植草坪的都可以称作草坪草，但现代草坪主要用禾本科草，而把用于建植草坪的禾本科草称为草坪草。构成草坪植被的草本植物是建植草坪的基本物质材料。草坪草是能够形成草坪并可以修剪的一些草本植物种或品种。

The cultivation techniques of turf grass in the world are represented by golf course turf grass. Lawn grass is an artificial grassland which is densely planted with perennial dwarf herbaceous plants and pruned. In the mid-18th century, a large area of lawn appeared in British natural scenery parks. Lawn also appeared in modern Chinese gardens. It is generally set in front of the house, square, open space and around buildings for viewing, recreation or sports venues.
