人造草坪由3层材料组成。基础层是由夯实土层、碎石层和沥青或混凝土层组成。基础层要求坚实、不变形，表面光洁和不透水，即一般的混凝土场地。由于曲棍球场地面积大，施工时一定要处理好基础层，防止下陷。若铺混凝土层，混凝土固化后要切割出膨胀缝，防止热胀变形和裂缝。

在国外，草皮层常见两种:1、草皮层叶状纤维较薄，仅1.2~1.5mm;2、草皮纤维较厚，20~24mm，其上用石英填充几乎到纤维顶部。
