人工草地按其用途和利用时间长短可分为3类:

①轮作中的短期草地。可利用2～3年，长者达5年,以生产干草和冷季放牧为主。
① Short term grassland in rotation. It can be used for 2-3 years and the elderly for 5 years.
②永久放牧地。以放牧为主，也可适当割草，为放牧、割草兼用草地。
② Permanent grazing. It is mainly for grazing. It can also be mowed properly for grazing and mowing.
③永久割草地。以割草为主，也适当放牧，为割草、放牧兼用草地。
③ Mow the grass forever. Mainly for mowing, but also appropriate grazing, for mowing, grazing and grassland.
人工草地可单播一种牧草，用于收割作青贮、青干草或作种子田；也可混播多种牧草。混播牧草在产量、品质、青草期和利用年限等方面均优于单播。中国人工草地中推广的草种除紫花苜蓿外，北方草种有沙打旺、老芒麦、披碱草、无芒雀麦等；南方多用红三叶草、白三叶草、多年生黑麦草和鸭茅等。播种方法包括人力播、畜力播和机具播，在地形复杂、劳力少、机具作业不便的地区，可用飞机播种和施肥（见牧草栽培）。
The artificial grassland can be planted with one kind of forage, used for harvesting for silage, hay or seed field, or mixed with many kinds of forage. The yield, quality, green grass period and utilization life of mixed forage are better than that of single sowing. In addition to alfalfa, there are Astragalus adsurgens, Elymus sibiricus, Bromus inermis, etc. in the north, red clover, white clover, perennial ryegrass and Dactylis in the south. Sowing methods include manual sowing, animal sowing and machine sowing.
